First seen on television in Great Britain, Motorcycle scrambling was a popular off road sport.  The BBC brought a television sports programme called  Grandstand onto the screen on a Saturday afternoon during the 1960’s. Scrambling had been a much loved sport in the north of England as far back as the 1930’s.

One of the early contenders for this style of motorcross was the Birmingham Small Arms Company probably better known as BSA. Founded in 1861 by 14 gun smiths BSA was an arms dealer making weapons for the British government. During this period, the British were fighting in the Crimean war. Once the war ended BSA used their technical skills and in the 1880’s started to build bicycles, moving to motorcycles in around 1907.

Another giant during this era was the much loved Norton motorcycle. From humble beginnings in 1898 James Norton started life off by making bicycle chains. The first Norton produced was in 1902 and had a Belgian Clement engine. It was due to world war one and the supplying of motorcycles to the government that the name of Norton Motors Limited was a success. From 1947 to 1954 the Norton team swept the board at the Isle of Man TT races.

Motorcycles ridden on the roads during the 1930’s where much the same as those being used for off road motorcycling. Sometimes this kind of motorcoss is called Dirt Bike Racing. Due to the rough treatment the bikes received across the hilly and often wet and rugged landscape, the rigid frame was replaced with suspensions.

In 1966 motorcross was first seen in the United States when Torsten Hallman, a Swedish motorcycle champion featured in an exhibition event riding against U.S. TT riders in Simi Valley, California.

In 1972 Supercross was born after the successfully tailor made for television sport of motorcross was held inside a stadium in Los Angeles. There are a few differences between supercross and motorcross. Supercross races are televised and as a result have the support of heavy advertising, they are not as fast as motorcross but have man made tracks with higher difficulty.

These events are commercially successful, and most are governed by the American Motorcyclist Association.

All through the 1980’s the Japanese technology was at the forefront of motorcross with their two-stroke engine, but Californian environment laws during the 1990’s looked for changes in technology and the four-stroke engine was designed.

Supercross goes pink for cancer awareness.

The sport of Supermoto is a cross between road racing and motorcross. The races normally held on go-kart tracts that has an off road partition. The track is made up of a mixture of tarmac and dirt track, sometimes with small jumps incorporated into the dirt track.

The riders wear leathers with motorcross boots and helmet. The skill required to ride supermoto shows off the rider and bikes ability to ride on the twisty tracks, rather than at a massive speed. Normally less than 160kmh.

There have never been so many superb off road bikes for sale, KTM motorcross bikes or a Yamaha dirt bike, the choice is yours. Motorcross 125, what a great bike to own.

Be sure to read carefully if you are taking out a motorcycle loan, sometimes it may be more prudent to borrow the money from your dad!

So, make sure you have all the kit to keep you safe. A Motocross helmet that fits you correctly, and don’t go riding in shorts, whatever the weather! Motorcross parts are just as important to you as the bike.

In the United States, Supercross races are the second most watched motorsport, and growing. Enjoy watching it, and doing it. If you are a car driver, always double check for the bike rider who may be in your blind spot.

Ride safely.
